Marine Fisheries and Technology Station, Cox’s Bazar

This station, with an area of 4 ha, was established at Cox’s Bazar in 1991. The station is being equipped with five specialized laboratories, 1 indoor cistern complex with 20 cisterns and 1 outdoor complex with 42 cisterns (200m2 each), and a guest house. The research divisions of the station are :

  • Marine Fish Behavior & Fishing Technology,
  • Mariculture,
  • Processing, Product Development & Quality Control,
  • Oceanography & Marine Pollution,
  • Stock Assessment, and
  • Fisheries Socioeconomics.

Function of Different Divisions

Administrative Division
Same as other stations.

Marine Fish Behaviour and Fishing Technology

  • To conduct research on the behaviour of important marine species, particularly their behaviour in response to fishing gear.
  • To conduct studies on present and potential marine fishing technologies, including fishing craft, fishing gear and on‑board facilities, and in particular develop improved fishing technology for the marine artisanal fisheries.
  • To conduct studies of the marine fisheries, including studies on the distributions of fishing and on fishing practices and to  cooperate with other Divisions at MFTS, FRI, particularly by providing technological support to the Stock Assessment, Resource Statistics and Dynamics Division.
  • In cooperation with the Technology Testing Division, and Manpower Development Division of  FRI Headquarters, maintain an active extension program to disseminate the results and other research‑based information to the marine fishermen and fishing communities.

Mariculture

  • To conduct regular reviews of potential mariculture opportunities and surveys for locations suitable for the development of those opportunities.
  • To develop techniques for the commercial culture of potential mariculture species.
  • To conduct research in support of the Division's development functions, including research on reproductive physiology, genetics, nutrition and environmental requirements.
  • To conduct environmental impact studies on mariculture developments.
  • To provide technical support to extension programs relevant to the Division's work.

Processing, Product Development and Quality Control

  • To conduct research on the nutritional qualities and the properties of important marine species.
  • To conduct research on post‑harvest handling, preservation and processing of important marine species.
  • To conduct research on the physical, microbiological and biochemical properties of seafood products.
  • To develop product handling, preservation and processing techniques and technology for creating value‑added products from the marine fisheries.
  • To provide technical support to extension programs relevant to the Division's work.

Oceanography and Marine Pollution

  • To conduct research on the physical and chemical oceanography of Bangladesh marine waters, with particular attention to water movements and characteristics, relevant to fish population.
  • To conduct research on the biological oceanography of Bangladesh marine waters and on the ecology of production systems that support marine fisheries resources.
  • To conduct research and monitoring studies on marine pollution and its impact on the fisheries.
  • To provide advice and policy recommendations on the control of pollution in consultation with Technology Testing and Monitoring and Conservation Policy Division of FRI HQs.
  • To cooperate with the other Divisions at MFTS, FRI, particularly by providing oceanographic support for the Mariculture Division.

Stock Assessment, Resource Statistics and Dynamics

  • To conduct studies on resource biomass, catch and fishing effort, and to gather other fisheries statistics on marine fisheries.
  • To conduct research and monitoring studies on the population structure and dynamics of marine resource population, including studies of their age and growth rate.
  • To conduct methodological research on stock assessment and fishery management techniques appropriate to the marine fisheries of Bangladesh.
  • To conduct research on the ecology of marine resource species, including: their distribution, migrations and environmental preferences; their modes of reproduction and reproductive seasons; their food types and major predators.
  • To provide  advice and policy recommendations on mari
