Freshwater Station, Mymensingh

The largest station of the institute, with an area of 40 ha that is located in Mymensingh attaching to the BFRI Headquarters. The station has 7 laboratories as follows :
  • Fish genetics and reproduction,
  • Fish feed and nutrition,
  • Water quality,
  • Fish disease,
  • Pearl culture,
  • General histology & histopathology, and
  • An analytical laboratory.
The station has well established and sophisticated carp and prawn hatcheries. It has as many as 118 drainable ponds consisting of 20 mini ponds, 52 nursery ponds (0.1 ha each), 47 rearing ponds (0.25 ha each) and 16 grow-out/brood stock ponds (1.6-2.6 ha each). Other physical facilities include a feed store, office buildings, residential quarters, a 30 bed dormitory, a community center and a 5-bed guesthouse. The various research activities of the station are implemented by the following divisions :

  • Reproductive Physiology & Genetics,
  • Aquaculture & Farming System,
  • Nutrition, Food & Feed Technology,
  • Pollution, Disease Diagnosis & Control,
  • Soil, Water & Productivity Management, and
  • Fisheries Economics & Socio-economics,

Two sub-stations are attached to Freshwater Station. These are : Freshwater Sub-stations, Jessore and Sayedpur.

Function of Different Divisions

Administrative Division

  • To undertake overall administration and financial management of the center under the direct guidance of the Director FRI.
  • To provide infrastructural facilities to the research division.
  • To undertake procurement of stores to facilitate the scientific work.

Reproductive Physiology and Genetics

  • To conduct experimentation on population genetics, biochemical genetics, genetical engineering, and also on biotechnological aspects for upgrading of gene pool and conservation of fish genetic resources.
  • To conduct experimentation on reproductive physiology, ecophysiological and endocrinological aspects of breeding of fish to achieve better control on their reproduction and quality seed production.

Aquaculture and Farming System

  • To conduct experimentation on evolving packages of practices in terms of suitable species, size, stocking density and proportion, feeding, fertilization, harvesting and other management measures for fish culture in ponds.
  • To conduct experimentation on integrated fish farming, and also on Farming Systems and to evolve different models of such farming systems.
  • In cooperation with the Technology Testing Division and Manpower Development Division of the FRI Headquarters, to maintain an active extension program to disseminate the results and research based information generated by this division.

Nutrition Food and Feed Technology

  • To conduct experimentation on the nutritional requirements of different life history stages of fish.
  • To conduct digestive physiological experiments to understand the mechanism of better assimilation of food for higher fish production and maximum output of the brood stock and healthy seed.
  • To survey the availability of locally available by-products of agro-industry for formulating a balanced and cost effective feed for fish.

Pollution, Disease Diagnostic and Control

  • To undertake experimentation to develop diagnostic procedures for viral, bacterial, mycoses and algal diseases and protozoan and metazoan parasitic diseases.
  • To undertake experimentation to understand the mechanism of environmental stress and environmental induced diseases.
  • To assess pollution status and its impact on fish.
  • To develop health monitoring and management system to incorporate into farming technology for increased production.

Soil, water and Productivity Management

  • To study the basic architecture and production processes of freshwater pond ecosystem in different soil types to help manage them successfully for optimizing fish production.
  • To study the mechanism of nutrient release from pond sediment to optimize productivity.
  • To study control of eutrophication and take advantage of higher primary productivity for optimal fish production.

Fisheries Economics and Socio-economics

  • To conduct socio-economic surveys.
  • To conduct studies on economic and socio-economic aspects of aquaculture, and make policy recommendations on improvement of small-scale fish farmers.
  • To conduct study to evaluate the economics of aquaculture operations in different scales and types of management.
  • To conduct socio-economic impact studies of policies and projects related to aquaculture and cultured-based open-water fisheries.
  • To participate in planning for integrated rural development and resource management.
  • To study the socio-economic impacts of aquaculture on food production, employment, income and foreign exchange earnings.
  • To study the social and economic constraints for development.
